The production places into context the tragedy that unfolded between 11 and 19 July 1995 during the military operation codenamed Krivaja 1995\, when soldiers of the Republika Srpska Army killed and massacred more than 8\,000 people. According to the memorial at Srebrenica\, the total number of victims recorded in 2025 is 8\,372\, although the final figure has not yet been established. Most of those killed were Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) from the Middle Podrinje region. \n\n“…it is necessary to write about Srebrenica\, because no poem\, no story\, no novel\, nor any play about Srebrenica can ever truly reach its end…”\nLosing Humanity (The Sorrowful Secrets of Srebrenica)\n\nThe performance will be presented in Slovenian. \nEvent website.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the international COP Bike Ride initiative\, which promotes sustainable mobility\, climate action and global solidarity\, the Novo Mesto–Zagreb cycling stage will take place on Thursday\, 10 September 2026. \nThe ride will start at 9 am at Novi trg in Novo Mesto. Participants can join the entire stage or just part of it and cycle at their own pace. The route is designed to avoid busy roads as much as possible. \nThe cycling caravan highlights the importance of sustainable mobility and advocates for better conditions for walking and cycling\, as well as more ambitious measures to address climate change. The Slovenian stage will take place from 6 to 10 September\, with Zavod Zora (Pumpnca) and Est=etika Association joining the initiative locally. \nParticipation is at your own risk. For many years\, he has closely followed wars and their consequences\, particularly in the Middle East and Africa. \nA few days after Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022\, he travelled to the country under attack. Between 2022 and 2025\, he visited Ukraine five times. On this occasion\, he decided not only to report on the war but also to support what he saw as the attacked and weaker side. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, 12 September 2026\, at 4 pm\, Kolesarsko društvo Zverinice and Tevž Turk will host the TT Backyard Jam in Herinja vas near Novo Mesto\, an exciting mountain biking competition held on one of the largest private slopestyle courses in Slovenia. \nThe event will follow a relaxed jam session format\, with riders taking to the course simultaneously\, performing challenging jumps and tricks and competing for victories in three categories: Best Line\, awarded for the smoothest and most technical overall line; Best Trick\, for the best trick; and Best Whip\, for the best style. \nThe programme will begin at 10 am with an open practice session and an opportunity to get familiar with the course. This will be followed by a break for refreshments and course maintenance from 2 to 4 pm\, while the competition will take place from 4 to 6.30 pm. The awards ceremony and social gathering will begin at 6.45 pm. \nIn addition to the competition\, the event will feature music\, food\, drinks and socialising for mountain biking enthusiasts. SUMMARY:16th Mayor’s Charity Tennis Tournament
DESCRIPTION:In September\, the courts of Portovald Tennis Club will once again welcome tennis enthusiasts and supporters of a good cause. The Mayor’s Charity Tennis Tournament (Dobrodelni županov teniški turnir)\, which has over the years become one of the best-known charity events in the municipality\, will be held for the 16th time this year on Saturday\, 12 September 2026\, at the Portovald Tennis Club courts. \nSince its beginnings\, the tournament has brought together sport and solidarity. Every year\, the funds raised are donated to an individual or family from the municipality facing difficult circumstances. Over the years\, the tournament has raised tens of thousands of euros in support. \nThis year\, the funds raised will be donated to local resident Mojca Bohte\, who is facing a challenging health situation. Through donations and a raffle\, funds will be raised towards the purchase of an adapted vehicle for people with disabilities\, which will make her everyday life easier. \nIn addition to the tennis matches\, the tournament will feature a varied accompanying programme\, including an opening ceremony\, a raffle and the opportunity to make donations at the event. \nEvent website

DESCRIPTION:The Sponsorship Programme in Slovenia\, operating under the auspices of the Anita Ogulin Association\, and the Sponsorship in Culture Ambassador Irena Yebuah Tiran invite you to the Charity Opera Marathon – an event that brings together sport\, culture and charity in a single day. It will take place on Sunday\, 13 September 2026. \nThe 42-kilometre route will connect the municipalities of Šmarješke Toplice\, Novo Mesto\, Šentjernej and Škocjan. At stops along the route\, the sound of running feet will briefly give way to opera performances by Irena and her musical guests. \nThe Charity Opera Marathon raises funds for children and young people participating in the Sponsorship in Culture programme. The aim is to provide young people pursuing careers in culture with equal opportunities\, so that their progress depends on their potential and effort rather than their family’s financial circumstances. \nThe marathon will start at 9 am in Otočec (near Šoferska restavracija Otočec)\, with the finish expected at 2 pm in Šmarjeta\, in front of Moletova hiša. \nStops: \n\nNovo Mesto (Mrak Inn)\nŠentjernej (Primož Trubar Cultural Centre)\nŠkocjan (Škocjan Cultural Centre)\nŠmarjeta (Cultural Centre)\n\nJoin Irena and run the whole marathon or just part of it – all for a good cause. \nRegistration is available via the link (available in Slovenian). \nCharity remains at the heart of the marathon. DESCRIPTION:The Janez Trdina Cultural Centre\, in co-production with the DLUD\, invites you to the opening of the exhibition Andrej Perko: Sinkings on Monday\, 14 September 2026\, at 8.00 pm at Kocka Gallery. \nThis photographic exhibition by Andrej Perko\, winner of the 4th Etike(te) Biennial award\, is closely connected to his childhood memories\, part of which he spent in the Dolenjska region by the River Krka. Sinkings is therefore not merely a geographical concept but carries much broader connotations: sinking as an act of remembering on the one hand\, and sinking as a means of hiding from the world on the other – into the realm of the unconscious and the concealed. DESCRIPTION:Galerija Ulti invites you to the opening of Modrenja\, an exhibition by new member Andreja Komočar\, which will take place on Thursday\, 17 September 2026\, at 7 pm at ULTI Gallery in Novo Mesto. \nAt the opening\, the artist and her work will be presented by Assoc. Prof. Dr Kiki Klimt. \nSinger-songwriter Jože Voglar will perform two-thirds of an original song at the opening. \nAndreja Komočar is a new member of DLUD and has been devoted to visual art for many years. For a long time\, art was merely a side activity that she did not dare to fully pursue. Six years ago\, however\, she decided to enrol at the Arthouse School of Drawing and Painting\, where she graduated in 2023 and completed her master’s degree in 2024. Since then\, there have been no limits to her artistic practice. \nThe exhibition is dedicated to the colour blue\, exploration and gentleness – three elements that have characterised Andreja’s artistic expression from the very beginning: her dedication and courage in using colour\, her tireless curiosity and refusal to be constrained by rules\, and her remarkable ability to draw beauty\, gentleness and sublimity from some of life’s most difficult experiences. \nIn the exhibition Modrenja\, Andreja Komočar presents prints created over the past year. \nThe exhibition will be on display until 30 October 2026.

DESCRIPTION:The Miran Jarc Library Novo Mesto\, in cooperation with its partners\, invites you to join the cycling tour A Bike or a Book – As Long as You Keep Moving (Kolo ali knjiga\, samo da se miga)\, organised as part of the European Mobility Week and the Cyclists Welcome certification scheme. The event will take place on Saturday\, 19 September 2026\, starting at 8:00 am. \nParticipants will meet in front of the Miran Jarc Library Novo Mesto (next to the courthouse)\, from where the route will lead through Ločna\, Otočec\, Draga and Mihovica to the Primož Trubar Cultural Centre in Šentjernej\, home to the Šentjernej Library. A short stop will be made in Otočec. \nAt 11:00 am\, participants will attend a talk with world traveller Aleš Juvanec as part of the Municipality of Šentjernej’s main European Mobility Week event\, Mobilni živžav. A passionate cyclist since childhood\, Aleš Juvanec has cycled more than 330\,000 kilometres\, visited 100 countries across six continents\, and completed an 11\,000-kilometre cycling expedition from his hometown of Škofljica to Beijing. \nThe route is suitable for recreational cyclists and participants with a lower level of fitness. After the event\, the group will return to Novo Mesto along the same route. \nThe number of participants is limited\, and advance registration is therefore required. DESCRIPTION:Rudolfovo – Science and Technology Centre Novo Mesto will host a range of free events for curious minds of all generations on Friday\, 25 September 2026\, as part of the RhythmOfLife project and European Researchers’ Night. The programme will include an Open Day at Rudolfovo\, a lecture on the use of 3D scanning in industry and the preservation of cultural heritage\, and a Chess960 tournament. \nWhat do natural rhythms\, 3D scanning and chess with 960 possible starting positions have in common? You can discover all this on Friday\, 25 September 2026\, as part of European Researchers’ Night and the RhythmOfLife – Exploring Rhythms in Nature and Human Life project\, in which Rudolfovo – Science and Technology Centre Novo Mesto is also participating. \nTo mark the occasion\, several free events will be held for curious minds of all generations. \nRudolfovo Open Day \nFrom 4.30 to 6.30 pm\, Rudolfovo at Podbreznik 15 in Novo Mesto will open the doors of its research laboratories. \nVisitors will be able to take part in scientific demonstrations and meet researchers from Novo Mesto and learn more about their work. DESCRIPTION:Between 25 and 27 September 2026\, Novo Mesto will mark World Tourism Day\, organised by TIC Novo Mesto in cooperation with local tourism providers. \nVisitors can look forward to a variety of events\, activities\, presentations and tours. The programme will bring together events on Glavni trg\, presentations of the local tourism offer\, activities and providers on Trška gora\, as well as opportunities to explore the town by e-bike. The event aims to bring Novo Mesto’s tourism offer closer to local residents and visitors while highlighting the importance of cooperation among local providers. \nFrom Friday to Sunday\, TIC Novo Mesto will host Open Days\, featuring the Send a Greeting from Novo Mesto campaign and promotional materials. The main programme will take place on Saturday alongside the Novo Mesto Market. Visitors will be able to see a presentation of e-bikes and the Cviček Mobile\, while the Rudolf’s Raft will offer a promotional ride. Transport will also be available between Novo Mesto and Trška gora\, making it possible to visit the Štruklijada na pušelšanku event at Verček Wine Cottage and the Open Wineyard Cottages. \nWorld Tourism Day\, celebrated around the world on 27 September\, will this year be held under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence for Transforming Tourism”. DESCRIPTION:Zavod Novo mesto and the Janez Trdina Cultural Centre invite you to the opera musical Kette\, taking place on Thursday\, 1 October 2026\, at 7.30 pm at the Janez Trdina Cultural Centre. \nAbout the play \nAn opera musical in which the echo of Kette’s heart resounds and his lyrical soul is reflected. \nThe opera musical Kette is an extensive musical theatre work focusing on the poet Dragotin Kette (1876–1899)\, with particular emphasis on his connection to Novo Mesto. In addition to exploring the poet’s short and intense life\, the work features an emotional love story that runs like a thread throughout the entire play and provides its dramatic tension. Although the poet Kette is at the centre of a tragic story\, he also radiates a profound love of life and a strong desire to create. This is also the most powerful message conveyed by the libretto and music. \nThe play takes the audience from Kette’s grammar-school years in Ljubljana\, marked by youthful playfulness\, spiritedness and an extraordinarily mature struggle for Slovenian identity\, through his relationship with his uncle\, his conflicts with Bishop Missia and the teaching staff\, to his arrival in Novo Mesto. In the music\, the city comes to life as an optimistic and bright place\, closely associated with Kette’s great love for Angela. This section highlights his poetry inspired by the Krka River\, Novo Mesto’s Glavni trg and Kapitelj\, while also tracing the events that influenced the poet’s departure for military service. In the second act\, we witness the beginning of Kette’s illness during his military service\, and his world gradually becomes less bright. Memories resurface and\, at the height of renewed hope\, Kette bids farewell. In the closing part of the musical\, the protagonist conveys\, through the libretto and music\, profoundly positive thoughts that leave a lasting impression on the audience. \nThe play is in Slovenian\, lasts two hours and includes an interval. \nEvent website

SUMMARY:DEKD 2026: Guided Tour – The Park at Grm Castle: Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:The Novo mesto Tourist Information Centre (TIC Novo mesto) and the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia\, Novo mesto Regional Unit\, are organising a guided tour entitled The Park at Grm Castle: Past\, Present and Future as part of the European Heritage Days 2026 programme. The tour will take place on Wednesday\, 7 October 2026\, at 4 pm at Grm Castle. \nThe central theme of this year’s European Heritage Days (DEKD)\, Heritage in the Whirlwind of Change – Opportunities and Challenges\, aims to highlight the vulnerability of all types of cultural heritage\, including tangible\, movable and intangible heritage\, as well as the related natural heritage (natural assets). More about DEKD 2026 is available via the link. \nAbout the guided tour: \nMitja Simič\, BSc in Landscape Architecture and Conservation Advisor at the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia\, Novo mesto Regional Unit\, will present the history and development of the area surrounding Grm Castle\, home to the only preserved castle park in the Novo mesto area. \nThe earliest traces of garden design at Grm Castle date back to the Baroque period (late 17th century)\, while more ambitious garden and park layouts emerged in the 19th century. To the west of the castle\, a formal rectangular garden was arranged on a levelled terrace\, following Renaissance-Baroque design principles. On the northern side\, landscaped park areas of a more relaxed style were created on either side of the castle entrance. A chestnut avenue dating from the late 19th century also survives\, leading from the castle towards the former main entrance road to the town (today’s Trdinova Street). Over time\, residential development\, changes in the use of the castle\, and above all the expansion of industry significantly altered the appearance of this area. \nParticipants will learn about the development and significance of the park in the past and present\, its preserved elements\, and questions concerning its future management. The tour will also present possibilities for revitalising the area\, the challenges of protecting cultural heritage\, and the role of the park as a space for quality living\, recreation and sustainable development. Special attention will be given to current initiatives for the restoration of the park areas surrounding Grm Castle and to balancing different interests in the planning of such interventions. \nPlaces are limited.
