They are stories about Luka Dončić\, Andre Agassi\, Petra Majdič and Simone Biles—about exceptional\, inspiring\, trapped and broken individuals. A long-time sports journalist\, Jerič approaches sport from a personal perspective—both through the eyes of a child who once dreamed of becoming a sports star\, and as a father of a young athlete for whom he does not wish a professional sports career. DESCRIPTION:The Zverinice Cycling Club is organising an intensive MTB workshop\, which will take place on Saturday\, 9 May 2026\, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in Novo mesto. \nThe workshop is designed to improve riding technique\, teach jumping skills\, and introduce both basic and advanced tricks. Participants will gradually build their skills\, starting with fundamental exercises on flat ground and progressing to safe jumping on ramps and features. \nThe programme includes theoretical foundations of bike movement\, practice of key elements such as the bunny hop\, and hands-on training on terrain. More experienced participants will also be introduced to tricks such as whips\, jump control\, and basic aerial techniques. \nThe workshop will be led by Tevž Turk\, a young freestyle and slopestyle rider from the Dolenjska region\, who will share techniques for safe jumping\, proper progression\, and correcting common mistakes. \nParticipants must bring a technically sound mountain bike\, a helmet\, and cycling gloves. DESCRIPTION:You are invited to the 1st Dolenjska Brevet\, Cycling Through Dolenjska\, which will take place on Saturday\, 9 May 2026\, between 9:00 and 19:00\, with the start and finish at the Main Square in Novo mesto. \nThis cycling experience connects 12 municipalities in the Dolenjska region included in the cycling guide Cycling Through Dolenjska (S kolesom po Dolenjski): Novo mesto\, Šentjernej\, Šmarješke Toplice\, Škocjan\, Mokronog-Trebelno\, Mirna\, Šentrupert\, Trebnje\, Žužemberk\, Mirna Peč\, Straža and Dolenjske Toplice.The route is just over 200 km long and includes approximately 2\,500 metres of elevation gain. It is composed of sections that are already part of the cycling guide. \nThe ride is designed so that individuals can join for the entire route or only a selected section. Two groups are planned: a faster group (brevet\, 200 km) and a slower (touring) group. As health challenges followed\, his life changed significantly. He turned to craftsmanship\, creating wooden products\, for which he received the Art&Craft Slovenia and Bela Krajina craftsmanship certificates. Since his primary school years\, he has also played table tennis\, which he describes as “his life\, therapy and relaxation”. He has achieved a number of notable sporting successes\, including three national titles among players with Parkinson’s disease. He has also competed four times at the PingPongParkinson World Championships\, winning a bronze medal in singles (Lignano\, 2025) and a silver medal in doubles (Laško\, 2024). \nA 20-minute documentary film about him\, titled Our Jurček\, presents his life story. SUMMARY:Workshop for Children: Discover Bumblebees and Solitary Bees
DESCRIPTION:The Miran Jarc Library Novo mesto invites children aged 10 and above to a workshop titled Discover Bumblebees and Solitary Bees\, which will take place on Thursday\, 21 May 2026\, at 17:00 in the Story Room. \nDid you know that at least 35 species of bumblebees live in Slovenia? Or that there are over 500 species of solitary bees? During the workshop\, participants will learn how bumblebees and solitary bees live\, why they are important\, what threatens them\, and how we can help them. \nParticipants will make nesting boxes for solitary bees to take home\, as well as a nesting box for bumblebees\, which will be awarded to one lucky participant. \nThe workshop will be led by Mojca Pibernik and Luka Rifelj from the Bumblebee Society – Slovenian Association for the Protection of Pollinators. \nThe number of participants is limited; registration is required at the Youth Department or by calling +386 7 39 34 665. \nThe event will be held in Slovenian. \nEvent website.

SUMMARY:Literary Evening: Urša Majcen at Goga Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Goga Publishing House invites you to a literary evening with poet\, playwright and screenwriter Urša Majcen\, author of the collection of plays Exercises with a Fish\, recently published by Goga Publishing House. The event will take place on Thursday\, 21 May 2026\, at 8:00 p.m. at the Goga Bookshop and Café in Novo mesto. \nExercises with a Fish is a selection of four dramatic works written between 2020 and 2024. The play The Drama Does Not Exist is a parodic theatrical documentary that\, with sharpness and humour\, addresses the real-life decay of the Ljubljana Drama Theatre building and its internal politics. Exercise with a Fish\, which essentially remains an exercise in style\, explores the position of a young woman in art and in the world through shifts between dramatic genres and humour. Children of Light addresses apathy as a consequence of the sense of entrapment experienced by younger generations\, who in a declining world are neither able nor willing to truly act. In Orpheus and Eurydice\, the author most fully connects with the poetic tradition and delves into the exploration of the word itself\, its power and its relationship to the most intimate. \nThe literary evening will be moderated by Liu Zakrajšek. \nThe event is part of the bookshop’s cultural programme\, co-financed by the Slovenian Book Agency. \nThe event will be held in Slovenian. \nEvent website

DESCRIPTION:Cviček Festival (Festival cvička) is the central wine and cultural event of the Dolenjska region and has been held in Novo mesto\, the cradle of cviček\, for many years. The festival is dedicated to promoting cviček – a unique Slovenian wine with protected geographical indication – as well as the winegrowing tradition\, culture\, and cuisine of Dolenjska. Each year\, the event attracts numerous visitors\, winegrowers\, winemakers\, and wine enthusiasts from Slovenia and abroad\, making an important contribution to the recognition of the region and its distinctive wine specialty. \nThe story of the Cviček Festival is created by the Zavod Novo mesto in cooperation with the Association of Dolenjska Winegrowers’ Societies and the Novo mesto Students’ Association. The event\, where winegrowing tradition\, youthful energy\, and a modern approach to wine culture intertwine and complement one another\, is one of the largest events in the Dolenjska region. \nThe programme includes a parade of winegrowers’ societies\, tastings of award-winning wines\, a rich culinary offering\, wine tastings at wine stalls\, a cultural and musical programme\, and the Cviček Court – the selection of the King of Cviček\, the Ambassador of Cviček\, and the Cviček Princess. \nA rich accompanying programme offers free guided tours of Novo mesto\, children’s entertainment\, and the Cviček Tourism Academy with an expert symposium – an event that opens discussion on wine-drinking culture\, winemaking\, and experiencing wine through modern approaches and a long-term vision. \nCviček Festival is not merely a wine event\, but a celebration of Dolenjska’s identity\, socialising\, and pride in local heritage. \nEvent website
