A Dolenjska treasure with a rich tradition and genuine flavours
Trška Gora is one of the best known and most picturesque winegrowing hills in Slovenia. Rising to an elevation of 428 m above sea level, it offers a wonderful view in all directions – from the Gorjanci hills, the forests of Kočevski Rog and the valley of the Krka all the way to Sljeme, a mountain peak above Zagreb. Below Trška Gora lies Novo Mesto, the capital of the Dolenjska region, embraced by the emerald Krka river, which further underlines the unique character of this winegrowing area.
The hospitable owners of Dolenjska’s vineyards have always been happy to offer visitors and hikers a glass of their local Cviček wine, perhaps accompanied by cured meats or other home-made specialities. The Open Vineyard Cottages project, which is now well established, is raising this tradition to a higher level. At weekends, and during the week by arrangement, the doors of wine cellars and vineyard cottages are thrown open to visitors, who can sample fine wines (both still and sparkling) and genuine local specialities made by the hardworking winegrowers of Trška Gora.
A visit to the vineyard cottages of Dolenjska is an opportunity to discover an authentic winemaking culture, with wine served straight from the barrel, and enjoy the genuine flavours of the region. This is an experience that combines tradition, nature and conviviality and at the same time invites you to discover the riches and hospitality of one of Slovenia’s most distinctive wine regions.
