LEON MINIBUS

Leon is a small electric minibus providing transport around Novo Mesto’s old town centre. It operates from 8 am to 3 pm on Mondays to Fridays and from 8.30 am to 1 pm on Saturdays. You can book a ride during Leon’s operating hours by calling the mobile phone number and – in areas where it is safe for the driver to stop – you can also flag Leon down and simply hop on.

There are three public toilets available in Novo mesto:

1. A public toilet is available in the old town centre on Sokolska ulica, with the entrance from Muzejska ulica. In 2023 it was voted the best public toilet among city municipalities and is known for its cleanliness and neat appearance. The fee is 30 cents. It is open from Monday to Saturday between 8:00 and 15:00.
2. Another public toilet in the town centre is located at Glavni trg 2. It is open from Monday to Thursday between 9:00 and 15:00, and from Friday to Saturday between 9:00 and 20:00.
3. A public toilet is also available at the Novo Mesto Olympic Centre, located in the Recreation Park. Use is free of charge. It is open from Monday to Saturday between 10:00 and 20:00.

The Loka Dog Park is located on the Župančič Footpath between Gostišče Loka and Pumpnca.

PHARMACIES

A pharmacy – lekarna in Slovene – is a healthcare institution where the supply of medicines takes place, including the dispensing of prescription and non-prescription medicines and the preparation of magistral formulations. Education plays an important role in the vision of Novo Mesto. The city’s nine primary schools, the proud tradition of Gimnazija Novo Mesto (the second oldest school with a gimnazija or academic secondary school programme in present-day Slovenia), the Marjan Kozina Music School, the big Novo Mesto School Centre (incorporating several vocational and technical schools, a vocational college offering short-cycle higher education qualifications, and an adult education department) and the advanced Centre for Biotechnology and Tourism were joined in 2017 by the newly established University of Novo Mesto.

GIMNAZIJA NOVO MESTO

Gimnazija Novo mesto is the only general gimnazija (academic secondary school) in Novo Mesto. It is the second oldest school with a gimnazija or academic secondary school programme in present-day Slovenia. Although it is second in terms of its date of foundation, it is the longest continuously operating gimnazija in Slovenia. It was founded by Empress Maria Theresa in 1746. Lessons were originally held in the building opposite St Leonard’s Church. When the gimnazija moved to a new building on Seidlova Cesta in 1912, the old premises became the town hospital. Today the building houses the Marjan Kozina Music School.

MARJAN KOZINA MUSIC SCHOOL

The Marjan Kozina Music School occupies the former Gimnazija Novo Mesto building opposite the Franciscan friary and St Leonard’s Church in Novo Mesto’s old town centre. Named after the Novo Mesto-born composer Marjan Kozina (1907–1966), it was founded in 1946. Today the Marjan Kozina Music School belongs to the select group of the most advanced and successful music schools in Slovenia, in terms of the number of students, the breadth of subjects and instruments offered, the quality of its work and its achievements.

Novo Mesto School Centre is a public institution in Novo Mesto and the largest of its kind in Slovenia. It also encompasses the Leon Štukelj Sports Hall, which, in addition to serving school needs, hosts matches of the Krka Basketball Club and various sporting and cultural events.

Grm Novo Mesto – Centre for Biotechnology and Tourism is an educational institution with a 130-year tradition. It is the legal successor of the Grm School of Agriculture, which was founded in 1886. DIOCESE OF NOVO MESTO

The Diocese of Novo Mesto is one of six dioceses in Slovenia and one of three suffragan dioceses of the Archdiocese of Ljubljana belonging to the Ljubljana Metropolitan Province. It was established on 7 April 2006. The former collegiate or capitular church of St Nicholas became the cathedral, and the former collegiate chapter in Novo Mesto (established in 1493) was elevated to a cathedral chapter. Andrej Glavan was appointed the first Bishop of Novo Mesto. Following his retirement (in 2018), Bishop Andrej Saje was appointed as his successor in 2021.

NOVO MESTO CHRISTIAN CENTRE

The Novo Mesto Christian Centre (KCNM) is a Christian church founded by a group of believers inspired by the Holy Spirit and devoted to Jesus Christ. The KCNM community has been operating since 2015. It is part of a national movement called Christian Centre Slovenia, which operates under the aegis of the International Network of Churches (INC).

There are two main cemeteries in Novo Mesto: one in Ločna, where the writer Janez Trdina is buried, and one in Šmihel, where Julija Primic – the muse and unrequited love of Slovenia’s national poet France Prešeren – is laid to rest. A new city cemetery was created in Srebrniče on the outskirts of Novo Mesto in 2000. The first forest cemetery in Slovenia, it extends over an area of ten hectares. It is designed in the Scandinavian style, where the final resting place offers a peaceful retreat from the ceaseless bustle of the city into the tranquillity of nature. The cemetery in Srebrniče is managed by Komunala Novo Mesto.
