Film description: Soviet Union, 1937, at the height of Stalin’s Great Terror. Thousands of letters from falsely accused prisoners are destroyed in a prison furnace, but one of them finds its way to the newly appointed local prosecutor, Alexander Kornev. The young lawyer, a committed and honest Bolshevik, after persistent efforts finally manages to meet the prisoner. Convinced that he is a victim of the corrupt local secret police, he sets out to report his findings to the Prosecutor General in Moscow…
