Would you like to become a local tourist guide in Novo mesto?
The Tourist Information Centre Novo mesto (TIC Novo mesto) invites all interested individuals to join the training programme for local tourist guides in the Dolenjska tourist region.
Working as a tourist guide is dynamic, creative, and full of interesting encounters with visitors from Slovenia and abroad. Guides introduce visitors to the stories of local towns and villages, cultural heritage, natural attractions, local gastronomy, and the unique character of life in Dolenjska. It is also an excellent opportunity for anyone who enjoys working with people, public speaking, exploring the local environment, and contributing to the region’s tourism identity.
The programme is designed to train candidates to obtain a licence for local tourist guiding in the Dolenjska tourist area, in accordance with the Decree on Tourist Guiding in the Dolenjska Tourist Area – available via the link (in the Slovenian language).
The Dolenjska tourist area includes the municipalities of Novo mesto, Dolenjske Toplice, Šmarješke Toplice, Škocjan, Žužemberk, Straža, Trebnje, Mirna, Mokronog-Trebelno, Šentrupert, Šentjernej, and Mirna Peč.
The training organiser is the Development Centre Novo mesto (Razvojni center Novo mesto), which has successfully carried out similar programmes in the past. The programme includes both theoretical and practical training, as well as a final competency assessment.
The course content covers in-depth knowledge of the history of Dolenjska and Novo mesto, the Krka River and its tributaries, archaeological heritage, important historical figures, art, cultural institutions, gastronomy, castles, local lifestyle, interpretation of natural and cultural heritage, as well as current tourism offerings and active experiences in the region.
The programme includes both theoretical and practical skills, including:
- tourist guiding techniques and skills,
- knowledge of the history, natural heritage, and cultural heritage of Dolenjska,
- gastronomy and the current tourism offer,
- development of communication skills, guiding psychology, and etiquette.
The examination for obtaining the title of Tourist Guide for the Dolenjska Tourist Area consists of:
- a theoretical part covering professional knowledge,
- a practical part involving independent guiding before a committee, with part of the presentation conducted in a foreign language.
Applicants must have knowledge of at least one foreign language and at least a secondary school education.
The programme will be delivered in a partly hybrid format, allowing participants to follow some of the content online and offering greater flexibility.
