As part of the Slovenian Tourist Board’s promotional campaign My Slovenia, which aims to bring Slovenia’s historic towns closer to domestic visitors, the radio team of Radio Slovenia’s First Programme stopped in Novo mesto. The radio feature naPOTki was created in cooperation with the Dolenjska Museum and the Novo mesto Tourist Information Centre.
Novo mesto is a town with an exceptionally long history, as the area was already vibrantly inhabited 2,500 years ago, during the Early Iron Age – the Hallstatt period – largely due to the Krka River and its favourable geographical position. It was here that 16 situlae were discovered, nine of them richly decorated, making Novo mesto the world’s largest archaeological site of situlae. The town was founded as a modern urban centre in 1365, and its medieval market square has remained the heart of urban life through the centuries. The pulse of the town, its history and some of its culinary specialities can be heard in the latest episode of naPOTki.
