Restaurant on the Main Square (Gostišče na trgu), located in the heart of Novo Mesto, brings together the region’s rich culinary heritage with quality, accessibility and warm hospitality. Housed in the oldest townhouse on the Main Square, where carefully preserved architectural features blend with contemporary design, the restaurant offers a welcoming setting for a relaxed lunch, a coffee break or a leisurely meal. One of its distinctive features is the Mayor’s Room, an intimate dining space with its original wooden ceiling, providing a unique historical atmosphere for special occasions and memorable culinary experiences. The venue also includes a charming courtyard atrium, which regularly hosts a variety of social and cultural events, from live music performances to art exhibitions.
The restaurant is closely connected with the Secondary School of Hospitality and Tourism and the Grm Novo Mesto – Centre of Biotechnology and Tourism. Students actively take part in the service under the guidance of experienced mentors, gaining valuable practical experience while contributing youthful enthusiasm and professionalism to the guest experience.
The menu features a selection of daily specials, carefully prepared lunches and dishes inspired by the culinary traditions of the Dolenjska region, made with locally sourced ingredients. Specialities include a traditional Dolenjska platter of cured meats and cheeses, fresh trout, and homemade štruklji (rolled dumplings with various savoury or sweet fillings). Every dish combines authentic regional flavours with a contemporary culinary approach.
Those with a sweet tooth will enjoy the in-house pastry shop, where handcrafted desserts are created daily, from elegant cakes to signature house specialities. Visitors can also enjoy Kette Cake, named in honour of the Slovenian poet Dragotin Kette, who lived in Novo Mesto, as well as the distinctive Cviček ice cream inspired by the region’s famous wine. The experience is further enriched by a boutique market offering carefully selected local products, gift items and delicacies from nearby farms and the school’s own estate. Visitors can purchase regional wines, cheeses, cured meat products, seasonal vegetables and even fresh milk from a self-service milk dispenser, highlighting the restaurant’s strong connection with local producers and the origins of its ingredients.
