A traditional restaurant with the legendary “Pugelj chicken”
Gostilna Pugelj (Restaurant Pugelj), with more than 60 years of tradition at the foot of Trška Gora near Novo Mesto, combines authentic local and international cuisine with comfortable accommodation. The restaurant is renowned for its house specialty — roast chicken, which has become legendary as the “Pugelj Chicken”. They also offer freshly prepared weekday lunches, several Sunday lunch menus, and dishes made to order. The menu includes traditional Slovenian dishes, as well as seafood, freshwater fish, and game, catering to lovers of diverse flavours.
The inn also provides accommodation: eight rooms (double and triple), offering overnight stays for up to 19 guests — ideal for those wishing to rest peacefully after exploring the surrounding area. The interior is designed to host larger groups — suitable for celebrations, weddings, and private events for up to 300 guests — while still offering comfort and a welcoming atmosphere.
Over the years, the inn has changed ownership several times, yet it has preserved the warmth and homely feel of its original setting. Younger generations also appreciate the modernised interior — the combination of tradition, homeliness, and comfort is what makes Pugelj appealing both to locals from Novo Mesto and to visitors.
