Novo Mesto is the cycling capital of Slovenia, something that is very evident from the many cycling events it hosts and most of all during the Tour of Slovenia, an international road cycling stage race that traditionally finishes in Novo Mesto’s Glavni Trg. The latter is organised by Slovenia’s top cycling club, Adria Mobil, which is based at the Novo Mesto Olympic Centre – an indoor velodrome that is the only facility of its kind within a 500-kilometre radius of Novo Mesto.
The Novo Mesto velodrome, one of the few indoor heated velodromes in Europe, combines cycling and athletics facilities under one roof and allows year-round activity, while the cycling track is of vital importance for the development of young cyclists. The facility is regularly used by cyclists and athletes from various Slovenian clubs and is gaining increasing recognition in the international cycling and athletics community. Covered by an inflatable membrane, the facility has an area of 7,574 m2 and a maximum height of 23.51 m, and can also be used for other sports and events.
It can be reached from the city centre via an attractive, partly gravel and partly paved route along the river Krka and then across the fields to the village of Češča Vas and the velodrome. Add another element to your day out with horse riding at the nearby Češča Vas Equestrian Centre. The return route takes you past the Adria Mobil factory, the Livada business park and the Bršljin neighbourhood and then over Marof to the city centre.
