A unique monument to the veneration of St James and to medieval pilgrimages from Slovenia are the 67 churches dedicated to St James the Greater. In the past, the medieval Way of St James passed through Slovenia in two directions: one led from Zagreb through the Dolenjska region to Ljubljana and, passing Postojna, to Trieste; the other came from Graz through Maribor and the Slovenian Carinthia region to Austrian Carinthia, continuing through the Kanalska Valley. The Way of St James is like the trunk of a tree with branches and leaves reaching into every village, onto hills and knolls, winding through hidden valleys. Along it, local and foreign pilgrims and travellers learn about history, culture, art, and people.
