A scenic walk along a forest creek, where you will discover the legacy of the visionary Mach family and meet the Japanese silk moth (Antheraea yamamai). Four kilometres from the centre of Novo mesto is the village of Mali Slatnik, where you can set off on a well-maintained and well-marked trail known as the Mach trail, which leads through the woods along a stream towards the village of Veliki Slatnik, where the Mach family mansion once stood and where the members of the Mach family are buried in the village cemetery. The circular trail has 7 entry points and starts and finishes at the Štefan Inn in Mali Slatnik. The trail can be completed through several routes. Johan Mach bred Japanese silk moths on Mach hill, while his son, the scientist Ernest Mach, was a famous physicist, whose name was later used for the unit for speed relative to the speed of sound (now typically used to describe the speed of aircraft) – the Mach number.
