Rafting on the Krka, the river that encircles Novo Mesto, offers a different view of the city’s sights and special experiences on the water. There is no life without the river. The Krka is one of the most beautiful and inspiring rivers in Slovenia. It rises near the little village with which it shares a name and flows into the Sava at Brežice. Its green colour and lazy flow have been a source of inspiration for centuries.
Its importance is underlined by the fact that in the past it defended Novo Mesto on three sides, while today it offers a new dimension for the development of tourism. People still use rafts on the river today, just as they did in the past. In pre-antiquity, there were settlements, hillforts and other inhabited areas along the lower course of the Krka, while in antiquity there were also river ports, ferry crossings and road stations. The river was also navigable with suitable vessels.
These days two rafts carry tourists and locals along the Novo Mesto river bends: the larger Rudolfov splav (Rudolf’s Raft) and the smaller Nika. A raft ride below the old town centre is a special experience, with views of the picturesque Breg district, the cathedral spire high above the town and the imposing Franciscan friary on its cliff above the river. Entertainment is also provided aboard the rafts.
