5 Picnic Spots

Inspired by locals

When warm days spread their wings and nature breathes in shades of green, a blanket and a picnic basket in the car become almost essential. If you’re looking for a spot for your next outing with a basket of treats, we’ve gathered a few of our favorites — perfect for couples as well as families.

Ragov Log City Forest

Just a few minutes’ walk from the city center brings you to Ragov Log, a city forest along the Krka River. The area features walking paths, wooden benches and plenty of flat, shaded spots ideal for a picnic. On the edge of the forest, you’ll also find a children’s playground and small sports areas.

City Beach at Portoval

The riverside area along the Krka can be lively in summer. Next to the beach, there’s a grassy area with a pier — perfect for a picnic with a river view. On weekends, you can also rent SUPs, boats and canoes.

Trška Gora

Among the vineyards of this famous wine-growing hill, you’ll find numerous vineyard cottages and scenic views over the Novo mesto landscape. Visit friendly local winemakers, order a glass of cviček and a small bite, then “set up camp” among the vines and enjoy the views. On weekends, many winemakers open their doors as part of the Open Vineyard Cottages initiative, offering a relaxed way to connect with local wine and locals.

Park at Otočec Castle

One of Dolenjska’s most recognizable landmarks is Otočec Castle — Slovenia’s only river castle, now part of the Terme Krka offering. Surrounding the estate is a beautifully landscaped castle park with tree-lined paths, benches and views of the Krka River. Cross the wooden bridge, walk around the castle, find a quiet shaded corner and enjoy a picnic on a bench or on the grass.

Marof Meadow

In addition to its exceptional historical value — Marof is the site where the highest number of situlas has been discovered in one location in Europe, making it one of the key archaeological sites of the Early Iron Age — this hill above the city also has strong natural appeal. Today, heritage and everyday life intertwine here, as locals often use the area for picnics or simply relaxing in the sun.
