Novo Mesto lies on a bend of the Krka River and on varied terrain, so scenic views are never in short supply. These are not just classic panoramas — some viewpoints offer striking perspectives of the old town, others reveal the wider Dolenjska landscape or intriguing details. We’ve selected five photogenic viewpoints you shouldn’t miss.
Observation deck Kapitelj
One of the most breathtaking views of Novo Mesto awaits at the top of the bell tower of St. Nicholas Cathedral, which rises above the old town on the Kapitel hill. After climbing 126 stone steps, you reach the viewing platform at a height of 53 metres — the highest accessible point in the city centre. From here, the city unfolds in all directions: from the winding Krka River and the rooftops of the old town, across Marof and Trška Gora, all the way to the Gorjanci Hills in the background.

Breg
Breg is one of Novo Mesto’s most iconic vistas. Tightly packed houses along the edge of a cliff and their colourful façades form a distinctive silhouette, best captured from Kandija Bridge or from the surface of the Krka — whether from a raft, boat or SUP. It’s no coincidence that this very scene appears on many postcards, books and promotional images of the city.
Gospodična and Trdinov vrh
For those who like to earn their views on foot, a popular hiking trail leads to Gospodična below Trdinov vrh (Trdina Peak), the highest point of the Gorjanci range at 1,178 metres above sea level. On a clear day, the view stretches towards Novo mesto, across the Dolenjska landscape and even as far as Ljubljana. At the top, you can rest at the mountain hut, where a traditional hikers’ meal awaits.

Trška Gora
Vineyards, vineyard cottages and sweeping views — Trška Gora is one of the most recognizable excursion spots above the city. You can reach the summit, crowned by the Church of the Nativity of Mary at 428 metres above sea level, on foot, by bike or by car. From the top, the view opens across rolling wine hills, the Krka River and Novo Mesto.
Marof
From Marof, a wide panorama stretches over the Ragov Log city forest, where the distinctive wooden bridge over the Krka River stands out. The view continues towards the picturesque old town, marked by the bell tower of St. Nicholas Church, the city’s central landmark.

If you’re looking for an idea for a short trip, a walk or a great photography spot, these viewpoints will make the choice easy. Some are just above the city, others require a bit more walking — but all offer a captivating view of Novo Mesto and its setting.
