Novo Mesto is strategically located between Ljubljana and Zagreb, along the Krka River and in the heart of Dolenjska’s rolling hills. Thanks to its unique combination of top-level infrastructure, a strong cycling tradition and diverse terrain that supports recreational, competitive and tourism cycling at all levels, the city offers challenges for every type of cyclist. Discover five reasons why Novo Mesto is known as the cycling capital of Slovenia:
-
Host of the country’s biggest cycling event
The finish of the Tour of Slovenia takes place every year on Novo Mesto’s Main Square. This historic square has hosted the race finale more times than any other city and has become inseparably linked with Slovenia’s largest cycling spectacle.

-
The only covered velodrome in the region
Novo Mesto is home to an Olympic Centre with a covered velodrome — the only one within a 500-kilometre radius. The facility is essential for the development of competitive cycling in Slovenia and the home base of one of the country’s most successful clubs, KK Adria Mobil. The velodrome enables year-round training regardless of weather conditions.

-
A circular route across seven city hills
The Green Circular Route is a marked 10-kilometre loop that runs across seven hills and is suitable for recreational cyclists. It connects the city centre with Ragov Log, Marof and other key urban areas. The route is varied, mostly paved, with some gravel and forest sections.
-
Active all year round
Novo Mesto offers an extensive network of cycling paths throughout the city and along the Krka River. A pump track is located in Loka, while riverside routes run past Portoval, across Štukelj Bridge and Julija’s Footbridge. In summer, the city beach serves as a starting point for combining cycling and water activities.

-
Direct access to the countryside
From the city centre, you can reach the vineyards of Trška Gora in just a few minutes by e-bike. The terrain is ideal for recreational rides on gravel or asphalt, with plenty of opportunities to stop at local vineyard cottages. Nearby MTB parks are also available for more demanding mountain bikers.
