“Local” is a word that keeps popping up everywhere — on banners, ads, billboards and all kinds of promotional materials.
But does it really mean anything, or is it just another marketing trick?
- Local produce is usually harvested by our farmers right before it’s sold, which means it’s fresher and more nutritious. Because it hasn’t travelled long distances from other countries or even continents, it keeps more vitamins, minerals and flavour.
- When we buy local, we directly support farmers and producers within our own community. The money stays in the local environment, strengthening the economy and encouraging the growth of small businesses.
- Local food has a smaller carbon footprint, contributing to a more sustainable lifestyle.
- Local producers often use traditional methods that are kinder to nature. By choosing local products, we support the preservation of cultural heritage and nature-friendly practices such as organic farming, integrated production and the use of indigenous varieties.
- A local market also creates a space for direct contact between producers and buyers — an opportunity to truly get to know where your food comes from and to build trust. This fosters a stronger sense of community and deeper personal connections.
Have we convinced you why buying local matters?
If so, allow us to offer you the perfect solution: The Novo Mesto Market.
Every Saturday from 9:00 to 13:00, it brings life to the urban heartbeat of the Glavni trg. The market features produce and products from local growers, grouped into categories such as organic farming, integrated farming, horticulture, final products and culinary offerings. Visitors can stroll among stalls overflowing with fresh vegetables, fruit, honey and other natural delights.
The Novo Mesto Market is a place where tradition, nature and genuine human connection meet. Local artists and creators often join the Saturday scene, adding a touch of uniqueness and warmth. The market is frequently complemented by various side activities and events — such as the Goulash Cook-Off, the Urban Festival, Florjanovo and more — making it even more vibrant and engaging.
At a time when sustainability is becoming increasingly important, supporting local produce is one of the key steps toward a better future. It’s not just about shopping — it’s about building connections between people, nature and the community.
The project is carried out by Zavod Situla with the support of the Municipality of Novo mesto.
