Summer in Novo mesto

Nature & Sports

In the capital of Dolenjska, where river currents, street festivals, forest paths and the local drop of wine intertwine, Novo Mesto comes alive in summer at its own unhurried pace. The town doesn’t show off — it invites you instead: sit down, listen, take a swim.

Below Portoval, just a few steps from the Main Square, lies the city beach — a favorite spot for those seeking refreshment without leaving town. As part of the Paddling the Krka experience, you can rent a SUP, a canoe or a wooden boat and paddle past Julija’s Footbridge, Kandija Bridge, Breg and the Franciscan Monastery. If the river feels too slow, head off on a safari along the Temenica River. If it feels too fast — wait for the raft Rudolf.

At the foot of Trška Gora, the hillside with the highest density of vineyard cottages in the world relative to its size, new cycling routes await, along with ten electric bikes ready for climbs and curves. Ride up to the Church of the Nativity of Mary or stop at one of the Open Vineyard Cottages for a glass of wine. The first is for thirst; the second (and all that follow) are for the story.

For those drawn more to tree-lined paths and romance than to hills, a visit to Otočec Castle — Slovenia’s only river castle — is a must. Hiking enthusiasts, meanwhile, will find Trdinov Peak in the Gorjanci Hills, offering views, shade and — so they say — rejuvenating effects.

As the day turns to evening, Novo mesto becomes a stage under the stars. The first applause goes to the Krka River Jumps, the legendary diving competition from Kandija Bridge. It is followed by Night on the Krka, a tribute to the river and the life along it. Lovers of culture and art will enjoy the Novo mesto Summer Festival, street events of Novo mesto Summer Evenings, open-air film and theatre nights, the international jazz festival Jazzinty, Reku Reku storytelling festival and much more.

In Novo Mesto, summer is not just a season.
It’s a morning coffee on Breg overlooking the Krka.
It’s an evening when music fills the old town.
It’s a glass of wine beneath the vines.
It’s the feeling that you don’t need to go anywhere — because you’re already there.
