Green Tips for a Sustainable Visit to the Destination

Sustainable

Green, Sustainable, Local. The Slovenia Green Scheme & the Slovenia Green Consortium

Since 2018, the destination of Novo mesto has been part of the Slovenia Green Scheme of Tourism (ZGTS). This national program and certification system brings together all efforts for the sustainable development of tourism in Slovenia under the umbrella brand SLOVENIA GREEN. It offers destinations and providers concrete tools to assess and improve their sustainable practices, while also promoting these green efforts through the Slovenia Green brand.

By joining the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, our destination committed to:

  • promoting sustainable practices,

  • unifying sustainability efforts, and

  • highlighting local character and green stories.

In 2022, we prepared a new action plan to support the sustainable development of tourism in the Municipality of Novo mesto. With this, we committed to following the national and municipal Tourism Development Strategy 2022–2030. To achieve the vision of “green boutique tourism with a smaller footprint and greater value for all,” both Slovenian and local tourism are strategically focusing on the development and promotion of balanced, high-quality boutique tourism that builds on Slovenia’s natural and cultural identity and generates higher value.

The shared goal of these strategic directions is to increase added value for all stakeholders:

  • satisfied local residents,

  • motivated employees, and

  • enthusiastic visitors.

Green Accommodations With a Story

To receive the Slovenia Green Destination label (Bronze/Silver/Gold/Platinum), destinations must meet the criteria of the Green Destinations Standard. To obtain the Slovenia Green Accommodation / Park / Travel / Agency / Attraction / Cuisine / Beach labels, providers must first obtain one of the internationally recognised sustainability certificates verified by the scheme.

In the Municipality of Novo mesto, the following have received the Green Key certificate:

The following tourist agencies have received the Slovenia Green Travel Agency label by obtaining the Travelife certificate:

Both agencies are committed to green practices and tourism development. Through active outdoor experiences, they promote sustainable tourism and help create a positive impact on the natural environment, local community, and economy.

Trajnostna mobilnost v destinaciji

Medobčinski sistem izposoje e-koles GoNM omogoča mobilnost znotraj destinacije, razvejana mreža kolesarskih poti (cestno, turno kolesarjenje) pa ponuja odlične možnosti raziskovanja podeželja in omogoča mobilnost do bolj oddaljenih turističnih lokacij.

Zero-Waste Providers

A key part of sustainable orientation and reducing the environmental impact of tourism—especially plastic waste—is the zero-waste concept.

We encourage accommodation providers, travel organisers, and visitors to join the transition toward a green economy and sustainable resource management by preventing waste, reusing materials, and improving waste separation within their operations.

Sustainable Mobility in the Destination

As a green destination of the Pannonian region, we encourage both residents and visitors to use public transportation when travelling to and within the destination. Through promotional content, we invite visitors to arrive by train or bus. The GoNM inter-municipal e-bike sharing system enables sustainable mobility within the destination, while an extensive network of cycling routes (road and mountain biking) offers excellent opportunities to explore the countryside and reach more remote attractions.

By joining Slovenia Outdoor, Novo mesto has opened a new chapter in positioning itself as a top hiking and cycling destination. With sustainable measures, we are aligning with national strategic priorities and developing content in the field of tourism.

Visiting One of the Greenest Destinations in the World Is a Responsible Choice

Slovenia is among the world’s most environmentally friendly countries. The Good Country Index ranks Slovenia 4th among 154 countries for its positive contribution to the planet and climate. We are proud of our vast forests, rich biodiversity, protected areas and parks, abundant clean water, and exceptional drinking water quality. We also preserve a vibrant cultural heritage.

To prevent negative impacts of tourism on nature and local communities, Slovenia develops tourism sustainably. We kindly ask for your cooperation. The guidelines below invite you to make your visit to Slovenia green and responsible.

Let’s Act Responsibly, Safely, and Sustainably

Trust and safety for both guests and tourism employees are more important today than ever. We maintain trust in the I feel Slovenia brand through responsible travel standards, brought together under the label GREEN & SAFE.
