Novo Mesto joins European Mobility Week

From 16 to 22 September 2026, Novo Mesto is also taking part in European Mobility Week. This year, under the slogan “Mobility for All”, the initiative encourages people to reflect on how they travel every day and how they can make their travel habits more sustainable, safe and healthy.

As part of the week, the Municipality of Novo Mesto is organising a range of activities for children, young people, adults and older people. The programme brings together physical activity, socialising, road safety awareness and opportunities to discover different sustainable mobility options.

Novo Mesto is committed to sustainability

Sustainability is an important part of Novo Mesto’s development. The destination is part of the Slovenia Green Scheme and holds the Slovenia Green label, recognising its efforts towards responsible and sustainable development.

Sustainable approaches are also reflected in the field of mobility. Residents and visitors can use the city bus service, the GoNM bike-sharing system, the Leon electric minibus, Rudi transport services for older people and people with disabilities, and the Avant2Go electric car-sharing system. In September, city buses are free of charge when using the SITIUM system.

Active, safe and sustainable

As part of European Mobility Week, activities including Pešbus, Aktivno v vrtec z Belim zajčkom and Peš v šolo encourage children and young people to walk and use other active ways of travelling to school and kindergarten. A creative competition, “Moja lepa ulica!” (“My Beautiful Street!”), has also been prepared for kindergarten children, encouraging them to think about safe and sustainable routes.

On Saturday, 19 September 2026, the cycling trip Kolo ali knjiga, samo da se miga (“A Bike or a Book – Just Keep Moving”) will take place, organised by Miran Jarc Novo Mesto Library. Participants will set off from the library at 8 am and cycle towards Šentjernej. After the trip, they will have the opportunity to attend a talk with world traveller Aleš Juvanc.

Car-Free Day

The main event of European Mobility Week will once again be the traditional Car-Free Day, taking place on Tuesday, 22 September 2026, from 9 am onwards in Glavni trg.

Glavni trg will become a space for socialising, physical activity, creativity and learning. Visitors will be able to try out a cycling skills course, take part in a road safety quiz, play table tennis and street and mind games, join creative and sports activities, and discover different sustainable mobility options.

Road safety will also be an important part of the programme. Police officers, paramedics, members of the Slovenian Armed Forces, municipal wardens and search-and-rescue dog handlers will present their work and equipment, while visitors will also be able to see their service and emergency vehicles. The SITIUM system, the Library of Things and other examples of good practice from the local community will also be presented.

European Mobility Week once again provides an opportunity to reflect on how small changes to our everyday habits can help make our city more welcoming, safe and sustainable.
