The heritage of Novo Mesto’s traditional inns served on a plate.
Hotel Pri Belokranjcu is a welcoming family-run hotel and restaurant with more than 40 years of tradition, located just a few minutes’ walk from the centre of Novo Mesto. The Vrbetič family has been involved in hospitality since 1985, and today the business is proudly run by its third generation. The restaurant occupies a site with a hospitality tradition dating back to 1898, when it was first mentioned as the Amerikanec Inn (Gostilna pri Amerikancu). Today, it serves authentic Dolenjska cuisine and traditional Bela Krajina flatbread (Belokranjska pogača), prepared according to time-honoured recipes. Venison steaks, homemade štruklji (rolled dumplings with various savoury or sweet fillings) and apple and curd cheese strudel are just some of the specialities served alongside traditional beef soup and roast with sautéed potatoes.
Every dish is prepared using carefully preserved traditional recipes that evolved over decades in the inns of Novo Mesto, particularly after the Second World War. Some of these recipes originate from the former Vovk Inn in Kandija, which operated until 1943. After the inn was destroyed during the war, three handwritten recipe books remained in the Vrbetič family and today serve as a valuable foundation for preparing authentic dishes once characteristic of Novo Mesto. Although the town’s traditional inns have gradually disappeared, Pri Belokranjcu has proudly preserved this rich culinary heritage, allowing visitors to experience the genuine flavours that once shaped the town and the lives of its people.
