A Restaurant with Over 160 Years of Tradition
Gostilna Mrak (Mrak Restaurant), with a history spanning more than 160 years in Sela pri Ratežu near Novo Mesto, is recognised as a traditional Dolenjska inn that prides itself on authentic, home-style cuisine and the warmth of a local, welcoming atmosphere. In the past, the inn was known as Pod Klančkom, named after the small slope on which it stands — a natural landmark used by locals for orientation that gives the place a genuine village charm. This historic name preserves the memory of the inn’s long-standing local tradition and its continuity of culinary delights.
The restaurant is especially renowned for its daily freshly roasted suckling pig and lamb, served with homemade bread. Its menu also features a variety of other traditional dishes, including beef and mushroom soups, prežganka (thickened soup), fried liver, cheese štruklji, a selection of steaks, squid, and trout. In winter, the menu is complemented by traditional slaughterhouse dishes, accompanied by matevž, turnip, and sauerkraut.
The interior is rustic and homely — a countryside-inspired space offering a relaxed atmosphere, ideal for family gatherings, Sunday lunches, or larger celebrations. Beyond its delicious food, the inn’s location adds to its appeal: guests can enjoy the surrounding natural and cultural attractions of Dolenjska, including the nearby Krka River, vineyards, castles, and scenic points, creating a complete regional experience.
Since 2023, Gostilna Mrak has been officially part of the “zero waste” movement. As a certified zero waste restaurant, it follows environmentally friendly practices such as using solar power, collecting rainwater, meticulously separating waste to minimise landfill, sourcing ingredients locally — vegetables and meat from nearby farms — and using reusable packaging wherever possible. This approach helps reduce the restaurant’s environmental impact while promoting sustainable tourism.
