The Pušelšank Experience with Godmother Jožefina
Verček Vineyard Cottage (Zidanica Verček) is an authentic Dolenjska vineyard cottage, hidden among the vineyards on the sunny slopes of Trška Gora above Novo mesto. The cottage has a rich history, dating back to a vineyard from the time of Maria Theresa and continuing through the present-day family story of the Verček family. It has never been sold, with ownership passing down through generations. Every item in the cottage has its own story, as it includes everything the family no longer needed at home, giving the place a unique charm.
As part of the Open Vineyard Cottages project, the Verček family opens their doors to visitors who wish to taste the richness of local winemaking traditions and homemade cuisine. Godmother Jožefina invites guests to a pušelšank, a traditional wine-tasting gathering, where she serves homemade dishes alongside a glass of cviček or wines from the surrounding vineyards. Signature delicacies include zidaniški krampač (homemade bread stuffed with meat or vegetarian fillings), trgača (a savoury flatbread made from mixed or white flour with onions and bacon), kletarjeva malca (seasonally topped trgača), potato soup with Dolenjska-style dumplings, and a variety of poticas and other local specialties that reflect the rich culinary heritage of the Dolenjska region.
In addition to the gastronomic experience, Zidanica Verček, as part of the Vineyard Cottages programme, offers accommodation for two guests in the upper part of the cottage. This allows visitors to take their time and fully immerse themselves in the peace, the vineyard landscape, and the panoramic view stretching across the vineyards to the Church of the Nativity of Mary with the magnificent Trška Gora linden trees, the entire Novo mesto basin, and the impressive Gorjanci hills.
