The Rudolf Hiking and Cycling Trail, almost 40 kilometres long, more or less follows the boundary of Rudolfswerth, as Novo Mesto was once called. The boundary was delimited by Rudolf IV, Duke of Austria, a member of the House of Habsburg and the founder of Novo Mesto, in a charter dated 1365. The route of the Rudolf Trail was designed by Tomaž Levičar.
The greater part of the trail runs along the river Krka, through villages, down country paths and past numerous vineyard-covered hills dotted with vineyard cottages, a characteristic feature of the regional landscape and culture. There are also some forest sections over unpaved terrain, so the route is only suitable for mountain bikes. Certain points of the route require a little more concentration and technical skill. There are only two climbs along the route, with a total elevation gain of 800 metres. The highest point is Golušnik (510 m above sea level), and the lowest is Otočec (160 m above sea level).
