Row or paddle along the Krka at your own pace!
On hot summer days visitors and locals alike flock to Novo Mesto’s town beach below the Portoval Sports Park, where they can hire a stand-up paddleboard (SUP), canoe or rowing boat or simply relax and socialise. The town beach is located on the right bank of the Krka, just ten minutes’ walk from Glavni Trg, the main square. Active in the summer months, the “Rowing/Paddling on the Krka” initiative allows visitors to hire SUPS, canoes and wooden rowing boats and set off along the calm river to experience Novo Mesto from a unique perspective – the surface of this green Dolenjska beauty.
Most people head towards the town centre, a trip of around 1.2 kilometres each way. As you glide along the river you will pass under well-known bridges such as the Loka Footbridge, Julija’s Footbridge and Kandija Bridge, while enjoying views of Breg, old townhouses, Kapitelj Hill and the Franciscan friary. The trip ends just before the weirs near the old town centre. Those who prefer more peace and contact with nature can set off upstream instead. In this direction the river winds between densely wooded Portoval and the Župančič Footpath. The boathouse at Irča Vas, 1.7 kilometres upstream, is an ideal place to stop and take a break before returning downstream.
