Old Town Centre

The largest medieval square in Slovenia

#staromestnojedro

The old town centre sits on a picturesque meander of the Krka River, where history and architectural heritage shape a uniquely vibrant urban atmosphere. At its heart lies Glavni trg, characterized by its distinctive arcaded walkways that reflect the city’s rich mercantile past.

Overlooking the square stand the bell towers of the churches of St. Nicholas and St. Leonard, which, together with the Franciscan monastery, form one of the most recognizable silhouettes of Novo mesto’s skyline. Among the highlights of the old town are the town hall, the Franciscan library with its precious incunabula, and the Kette Fountain, inscribed with verses from the beloved poem Na trgu (“In the Square”).
